Special Education
Special education is specially designed instruction and related services that help students with disabilities access their education and make meaningful progress in school. These services are individualized to meet each student's unique strengths and needs and are provided at no cost to families under federal and Massachusetts law.
Special education is not a place—it's a collection of services and supports that may be provided in a general education classroom, a specialized classroom, or another educational setting. The goal is always to help students succeed in the least restrictive environment (LRE), alongside their peers whenever appropriate.
Students may qualify for special education if they have a disability that affects their ability to access the general education curriculum and they require specially designed instruction. Eligibility is determined through a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the school district with parent consent.
At Pittsfield Public Schools, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. We work collaboratively with families to develop individualized plans that support each student's academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and functional needs.
