Instructor, Lapsed, Out of State, or Out of Country applicants who have been approved by the Board to take the exam are eligible for a temporary permit, which will allow them to work as an instructor or cosmetologist/aesthetician/manicurist/barber/electrologist.

Temporary permits may not be used to open a new shop.

Out of Country permits and Out of State permits for applicants without a license will require supervision by an appropriately licensed individual.

If you submitted your application before April 1, 2022, the Board will automatically mail you a temporary permit. If you do not receive a permit in the mail, please contact the Board at cosmetologyandbarberingboard@mass.gov or 617-701-8792.
